9th Annual Conference

Normativity, Values, and Ethics in Socioeconomic Education and Research

We are pleased to invite you to the 9th Annual Conference of the Association for socioeconomic education and research (AS*EER), held at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences on September 14–15, 2026.

The long-cultivated self-image of economics as a value-free discipline – a standard in large parts of the field – has proven untenable, and not only since the various crisis phenomena of modern global economies. Economic modeling is inevitably based on normative assumptions; even core concepts such as rationality, efficiency, growth, or welfare carry underlying values that require reflection. Nevertheless, the role of normativity, values, and ethics in economics and economic education remains far from resolved. Even the multidisciplinarity of socio-economics does not always find it easy to navigate its own normative dimension.

We therefore invite submissions that critically examine normativity in socioeconomics and the economic sciences and develop perspectives for a normatively informed socio-economic education.

Contributions may adopt different perspectives and address various fields, for example

  • A realistic and desirable approach to value judgments in socioeconomics
  • Normativity and schools of thought in the field of economic research
  • Latent and inherent normativity in socioeconomics
  • Normativity as an interdisciplinary topic spanning socioeconomics, philosophy of economics, business ethics, and philosophy of science
  • Power and normativity in public economic discourse and policy consulting
  • Normativity in higher education and approaches to dealing with value judgments
  • Normativity in textbooks, schoolbooks, and teaching and learning materials
  • Values and ethics in relation to sustainable development
  • Normativity in the politics, pedagogy, and practice of financial education

The two keynote speeches at the event will be delivered by Prof. Dr. Susanne Hahn and Prof. Dr. Christian Neuhäuser.
