8th Annual Conference
The eighth conference took place on September 23 and 24, 2025, at Goethe University Frankfurt. Under the title “New Approaches to Knowledge Production for Socioeconomic Education: The Role of Think Tanks, NGOs, and Blogs” the conference focused on the influence of new actors on the dissemination of economic knowledge. The conference was organized by the Department of International Relations and International Political Economy at Goethe University Frankfurt in collaboration with the AS*EER.
Invitation Text
Pluralism and controversy are central guiding principles of socio-economic education. This is reflected, among other things, in the Beutelsbach Consensus: The principle of controversy aims to enable students to form their own opinions freely. However, while knowledge production in German economics departments remains heavily dominated by a single school of thought – neoclassical economics – a diverse ecosystem of initiatives has emerged in the years following the global financial crisis, producing pluralistic economic knowledge. These include, for example, the Dezernat Zukunft, the Forum for a New Economy, the Konzeptwerk Neue Ökonomie, the Netzwerk Plurale Ökonomik, ZOE—Institute for Sustainable Economies, and many more. In addition to conventional publications, podcasts and YouTube videos are now increasingly appearing. This knowledge is highly relevant for both formal and informal education.
In addition to traditional research papers, the program also includes short presentations highlighting the educational work of think tanks, labor unions, NGOs, and networks, as well as blogs, YouTube channels, and podcasts. The conference aims to contribute to further networking among these stakeholders and to the increased use of their contributions in socio-economic education.
